NATIONAL RARE DISEASE WEEK 2026

Message of the DILG Secretary

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) proudly joins the Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders, Inc. (PSOD) and the nation in the observance of the 17th National Rare Disease Week.

This year’s theme, “More Than You Can Imagine,” invites us to look beyond medical complexities and clinical diagnoses and recognize the profound humanity, courage and extraordinary resilience of the individuals and families of those living with rare conditions. While these challenges often remain hidden from public view, the stories behind them are marked by an enduring hope that transcends circumstance. This observance is a call to look closer and reaffirm their fundamental right to dignity, specialized care and an improved quality of life.

True advocacy requires us to move beyond mere awareness toward intentional inclusivity. The DILG remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that no Filipino is marginalized by the rarity of their condition. We call upon our communities and Local Government Units (LGUS) to serve as catalysts for systemic change. We urge our local leaders to institutionalize responsive support systems, prioritize early diagnosis and enhance the accessibility of specialized healthcare services within their jurisdictions. By championing such local policies, LGUs can bridge the gap between isolation and empowerment.

On the evening of February 28, as we participate in the “Light Up for Rare” campaign, let the radiance of our landmarks symbolize our collective vow – that the journey of those with orphan disorders shall no longer be dark or solitary. Let this light represent a government and a people united in compassion.

Together, let us build a nation where every Filipino living with a rare disease is seen, heard and empowered to lead a full and meaningful life.

Mabuhay!
