Organic Acid Disorders
Description: Organic Acid Disorders (OAs) are a group of rare inherited conditions. They are caused by enzymes that do not work properly. A number of enzymes are needed to process protein from food that we eat to be used by the body. Problems with one or more of these enzymes can cause an organic acid disorder.
Effect: People with organic acid disorders cannot break down certain compounds such as properly. This causes harmful substances to build up in their blood and urine. These substances can affect health, growth, and learning.
Treatment: The symptoms and treatment vary between different organic acid disorders. They can also vary from person to person with the same organic acid disorder.
Methylmalonic Aciduria (MMA)
Description: MMA is an inherited disorder in which the body is unable to process certain proteins and fats (lipids) properly.
Treatment: treatment of MMA includes carefully controlled diet including low-protein regimen and/or restriction of isoleucine, valine, and threonine. Vitamin B12 is given as adjuvant therapy.
