About

The Philippine society for Orphan Disorders, Inc. will serve as a central network for the advocacy and effective coordination of all viable efforts to sustain a better quality of life for the individuals with orphan or rare disorders in the Philippines.

Why set up PSOD, Inc?

A. Patients with rare disorders are “orphans” in the Philippine society in that they usually suffer from social isolation due to lack of public awareness of their conditions. Patients usually grow up not knowing anyone with the same disorder. There is also a scarcity of sources of information about these disorders that are readily accessible to the patients. Due to the very few number of medical professionals specializing in these fields, patients with orphan disorders have difficulty seeking medical aid.

B. Most medications/dietary products used to treat these patients are very expensive and are not readily available. Many of the Filipino patients with these disorders come from poor families who cannot afford treatment. For the very few patients, who have enough resources to support treatment, procurement from outside sources becomes a problem. There are very few agencies in the Philippines that import these products, and patients usually do negotiations by themselves. Medical services for these patients are usually also not covered by health insurance.
